Elephants at Periyar

I never thought the day would come when I could get inside the forests and see these beautiful animals in the wild. This memorable incident happened when I volunteered for the elephant census at Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary in the state of Kerala, India.

These group of elephants had come to the lakeside to quench their thirst opposite to our base camp. What fascinated me was the way in which the entire group was circling the infant at all times.

I had heard a lot times about how elephants remove bugs, insects and sores from their hide by rubbing their body against a tree. When I saw the same      ( see middle elephant ) , it was an overwhelming moment.

I realized my passion for India’s wildlife at this moment.
