Indian Muntjac

We reached the first check post of Top Slip en route to Parambikulam on the 20th of this month at 6.30 a.m. As our vehicle was negotiating the hair pin bends of Top Slip we came across the Indian Muntjac.

At the sight of our vehicle the Deer bolted into the bushes. We took the sighting of such a rare species as a good omen and continued our journey. We reached Parambikulam and after the initial confirmation required for accommodation and guide, we continued on our way to our first destination – Kannimara Teak Tree. En route we came across a few birds notable among them was the Indian Peafowl. After spending some time at Kannimara we started our ride to our staying quarters. At about 400 mts from Kannimara we came across a group of wild dogs ( detailed in the next post). Further away as we were climbing uphill we came across the Indian Muntjac once again. The species is more popularly known as Barking Deer. The alarm call of the deer is a sharp bark and shriller versions are normal modes of communication.

Barking deer
This particular doe was grazing in the grass near the bushes and was not concerned when we slowed our vehicle. We took some shots of this animal from the inside of our vehicle. Not satisfied with the results , I got out to get some close ups, against all advice of my team members. The Barking Deer is a very shy animal and normally shies away from humans. Armed with knowledge and against my own judgement, I approached it, as it watched me closely. If I went too close to its comfort, the doe disappeared into the bushes and reappeared a few feet further away from me. We continued this hide-and-appear game for quite a few times, till I was reminded by my mentor – Kannan that we were getting a little too late for our trekking activity. I had to abandon getting any closer and satisfied myself with the shots I had got so far.
